Google To Combine Chrome OS With Android; New OS To Be Released In 2017

Google is said to be planning on merging its Chrome OS on its computers with the Android mobile operating system. The new operating system is said to be unveiled in 2017 with an early version of the software to be shown off sometime early next year.

According to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, Google has been working on combining the two operating systems for the last couple of years, and now has recently made strides in its development. Chrome OS was the company’s attempt at providing users with a web browser-centric experience most commonly found on laptops called as Chromebooks. The Chromebooks were cheap and heavily relied on the need for internet connections to take advantage of all its software features. Android on the other hand is found on billions on smartphones and tablets manufactured by other companies.

The two operating systems functioned very distinctly from one another, and yet Google is planning on combining them into one. It could be deduced that the company simply want the Android operating system running on majority of devices including personal computers and laptops. This would also open up more possibilities as developers will have an opportunity to create new apps and experiences on a computer and not just on smartphones. Speaking of apps, some Android apps are already able to run on Chromebooks, which might have been an early sign to the company’s plan for the merge.

With the news of combining both operating systems, Chrome OS and its Chromebooks are said to continue receiving support from Google’s engineers, but their main focus will be the development of Android for laptops. The company’s new endeavor of combining its mobile and personal computer operating systems is comparable to what Microsoft is currently doing for Windows 10. Windows 10 runs on both desktops PCs and mobile phones with each running universal apps.

The Verge has confirmed with a Google spokesperson that a preview of the combined Chrome OS and Android operating system will likely be demonstrated during its I/O conference next year. The new operating system is expected to be released to the public sometime in 2017. No word yet if its release will be accompanied with new hardware.
